In recent weeks, much has been made of the Ford government’s reversal of funding cuts for social services. But as he cleans up his mess, he’s missed a spot.
We are the autism families Premier Ford left behind.
We are a group of seven families who have nine young adult children with severe autism and complex special needs. Our kids have been receiving specialized funding from the Government of Ontario for the past 15 years as a result of a precedent-setting lawsuit we launched against the Province that removed a discriminatory age-six therapy treatment cut off, thereby helping countless children in Ontario receive life-changing autism therapy. Over the past decade and a half, our families have built and relied upon a network of specialized support with highly trained staff to keep our children safe and enable them meet their potential. And now it has been needlessly ripped away.
A manufactured crisis.
In August 2019, the Ford government arbitrarily cut off our children’s court-ordered funding and failed to provide the promised transitions to mainstream services, leaving all of us in a state of crisis. Every effort we have made to meet with members of the Ministry of Children and Community Social Services has been rebuffed or simply ignored.
Meanwhile, the crucial prescribed one-to-one, round-the-clock staffing levels that our children need has been cut. The result… our kids are regressing. They are hurting themselves. Some have been checked into hospital. Others have wandered, unsupervised into cars and subway tracks. Mothers have had to quit their jobs. Premier Ford has created crisis where there was once order and hope.
We do not want to go to court to get this Government to do the right thing. But we will.
Your help in returning safety and well-being to our children would be so greatly appreciated.
